sorry...let's start over. I just can't understand how somone on section-8 is asking if they should hire an attorney. Put the money to better use.

Well the reality of it is, you don't have to be totally destitude to be eligible for section 8 housing. I interviewed lots of young mothers who were taking care of their responsibilities by working and still qualified for assistance. Section 8 is base on financial status but you can earn $2,000/mo and still be eligible. I believe the last time I looked at some policy on funding it said a person becomes ineligible for housing assistance once their gross earnings are 3 times the amount of their rent. And thier rent is based on a 1/3 of their gross earings (minus some deductions like child care) so if a mother is making 2,100 a month and her rent is 950.00 she will be paying approximately 700.00/mo rent out of her own pay. So just because they are getting some help it doesn't mean their rent is completely paid for...but those numbers were just to give you an idea so you don't think that people on housing assistance are all lazy and out of work and I'm only defending the ones who are taking care of their priorities.

My sister is a social worker in our state, and the laws here must be a little different. Never-the-less...if someone is in section-8 housing, there are obviously financial difficulties that got them there no matter how big or small. I understand that bad situations can not always be avoided, but when someone is asking if they should hire an attorney.......I'm skeptical of their truth of $$$$.

Is your sister a caseworker for the HA? Years ago I got a lawyer to handle my child support and she charged me 300.00 up front and 50.00 per pay period until I paid her 750.00 now at the time 300.00 wasn't easy to find but 50.00 out of my paycheck was managable. This isn't a high profile case, she doesn't need Johnnie Cochran!!!

Have you not heard of Legal Aid? They help low income people. Or she may have a rich Uncle who would help pay the retainer for an Attorney so she could get her section 8 back, yet can not pay for her monthly living expenses. You can't assume that because someone uses the phrase"hire an attorney" they are cheating the system, squandering their income, and needing your ridicule. She came to this forum for help, not your holier-than-thou reprimand and loathing.

After looking back over the OP's original posts I find that she in fact never even used the phrase "hire an attorney". She in fact asked if she should get an attorney INVOLVED.

It's probably more than this she doesn't get. Whatever ~ I believe the OP got the correct info, even if it was hard for her to "hear" through all of this.

I can't see any attorney taking on any case for that amount. This had to be moons ago.

It was in 2002 and her original fee was $1000.00 but I had a legal plan through my employer and this gave me a 15% discount.

I didn't think we were talking about hiring an attorney for "child support". I would spend any amount of money if it had to do with my children and would support anyone else that would do the same, but here...we were talking about hiring an attorney so that this person can stay/get back into section-8 housing.

OH LAWD.... Will someone help this child. Look Shellandty, I'm in the bible-belt so I'll put you on the prayer list ok??

I for one agree. However the poster has not responded, so anything we say is moot.

I don't need anyone to put me on their prayer list, especially if they can't spell "lord". I think this got completely out of hand and said sorry a loooong time ago and wanted to start over. Maybe it did say "get an attorney" not "hire an attorney".

Anyway....if it is "get an attorney", why not get an attorney to keep the ex away as to not jeopardize this person's future, instead of waisting time and money on the section-8 thing. Seems like the ex is the real cause of all these problems.

Housing is just as important as child support. Did you know that a requirement to receive section 8 is to maintain gainful employment? This means we probably have a working mother fighting to keep a roof over her childrens heads. Not a person, "hiring an attorney so that this person can stay/get back into section-8 housing" I for one would like to know Yulunda and her child(ren) are in a home and not on the streets.

Who can predict another persons actions? Lacy should have gotten a lawyer before Scott killed her, HUH?
