  One very important point to consider: The truth is the finish result will be much better as far as appearance, roof integrity and water-tightness if skylights are replaced during during a major re-roof, rather than piecemeal afterwards and the OP should consider agreeing to replacing them.

  Just a very very important FYI People seem to love to do this, but admitting a lower speeding violation is actually a terrible defense - in court or attempting to argue with an officer roadside. I suggest you get a lawyer to assisst you.

  Contact your University ombudsman, maybe something can be worked out. Unfortunately, you may be stuck. Unless you can show specifically that you applied as a dependent of a person on a work permit and they willfully miscategorized you, it was incumbent on to know and understand your status.

  A judge is not going to see the landlord's VERY VERY large concession of allowing 2 payments as anything but a big favor that you took advantage of. You owe the late fees. The other issues you mention, are irrellevant at this point. Your time would be better spend on learning some money...
